As a Doula, I Do Not:
Perform any clinical tasks
As a doula, I do not perform clinical tasks, such as take blood pressures, fetal assessments, vaginal exams, etc. I am present to provide you physical comfort, emotional support and advocacy during your labor.
I offer continuous emotional, mental, and physical support throughout your stages of labor. I will be available to gather and provide further information as the need arises to support you in making informed decisions. I will also provide support to your spouse or partner as they come alongside you. I provide a calming presence in the midst of a potentially stressful situation.
Make decisions for you
As a doula, I do not make decisions for you. I will provide any information I have in order to support you in making informed decisions. I can also gather further information for you at your request to help you make decisions. As a doula I support you in making your own informed choice as a means of engagement and personal power in your labor process.
Baby’s first feeding Support
The first hour after your babies birth is inherently beautiful as you attempt to latch him or her the first time. However this time can quickly become stressful when latching does not happen right away or seems difficult, as it often is. If you plan to breastfeed I am available for 1-2 hours after birth for questions and to support as you as you and your baby learn about breastfeeding together.
Speak to the staff on your behalf
As a doula, I do not speak to staff on your behalf. I am able to support you in asking further questions and gathering further information from your care providers to support you in making informed decisions and engaging in your labor and baby's delivery.
Postpartum follow-up visit
This in home visit is provided as an appointment 1-2 weeks after birth. During this appointment I will come to your home to follow up on your post partum care, answer questions, review any breastfeeding concerns, and also give you the opportunity to process and debrief your birth experience. At this time I am also able to provide further referrals in the community to support you and your family as you begin your life together.
Project any of my own beliefs onto your experience
As a doula, I do not project my own personal beliefs on to you or your experience. In preparing for my own birth and doula work I have discussed birth experiences with many women and heard their own stories, struggles, and successes. My goals as a doula is to support you in writing your own labor story, before, during, and after delivery in a way that empowers you as a woman, mother, and parent.
